My first Winter Games. There is something surreal about rehearsing outside in a stadium on an ice rink in the snow that makes you dream of the humid searing heat of Atlanta in August.
IT WAS COLD…… The show was a great collaboration with the city. It was only five months after 9/11 and it was very healing for our country to move forward and host the world and in turn feel the worlds support for us. It was a gift that really helped us step forward.
The show was written before 9/11 however, the theme of “Light the fire within”: finding a way to overcome your obstacles and adversity of unknown foes. Little did we know how important that message would truly be.
Winter games have a smaller budget by far to Summer Games, so we brought everything back to a human scale, which made us become better storytellers. I was honored with an Emmy award for outstanding choreography, which I dedicate to Judy Chabola, the lady who started it all… “Hola Chabola”!
