1996 Atlanta Opening & Closing Ceremonies

July 1996

Number two and we are on home ground. “How ya’ll doing?”

One of the biggest surprises of Atlanta was that I think the world was ready for a cute little “down home” show, complete with square dancers and fiddle music. What we gave them was very cutting edge, a riot of color and sounds, a non-stop flow of talent and the hopes of the NEW SOUTH.

Some of the lasting images for me, the Giant shadow screens paying homage to Athens (which by the way, here is a secret, the screens NEVER worked until the night of the show)!

Then the much debated SILVER PICK-UP TRUCKS… For the first time we had to choreograph machines… very fun indeed.

Of course the moment the world held its breath when Mohammed Ali stepped up to light the torch. Just stunning… the south did rise again… “Ya’ll come back now ya hear”
